Coe a început să cânte după ce și-a petrecut o mare parte din tinerețe în școli de corecție și închisori și a devenit cunoscut pentru prima dată pentru muzica sa stradală în Nashville . Inițial, a cântat în principal în stilul blues , înainte de a trece la muzica country , devenind o parte importantă a scenei country ilegale din anii 1970.
